CHATTANOOGA, TN — A 22-year-old motorcyclist died Monday night after a crash on Interstate 24 westbound near the Rossville Boulevard exit in Chattanooga, according to police. Chattanooga police said the man was pronounced dead at the scene after the motorcycle was involved in a collision with a tractor-trailer.
The crash happened just before 9:30 p.m. and began as a multi-vehicle wreck on the westbound side of the interstate. Police said the motorcyclist was traveling at high speed before hitting the back of the tractor-trailer. The crash prompted lane closures and slowed traffic in the area while investigators worked the scene.
Police say speed played a role in the deadly collision
According to Chattanooga police, the motorcycle was moving at high speeds before the rider crashed into the rear of the tractor-trailer. That detail has become a central part of the investigation as officers work to determine the sequence of events leading up to the fatal wreck.
Police have not released the motorcyclist’s name. They also have not said whether any other injuries were reported in connection with the crash. For now, the department is treating the case as an active investigation and has not announced any charges or citations.
The collision happened on a busy stretch of I-24 near the Rossville Boulevard exit, a location that can carry heavy commuter and freight traffic. Because the crash involved more than one vehicle, investigators were also sorting through the circumstances surrounding the initial impact and the subsequent response.
Westbound lanes shut down after the wreck at mile marker 180
Before the fatality was confirmed, Tennessee Department of Transportation officials said the multi-vehicle crash closed all westbound lanes of Interstate 24 at Rossville Boulevard in Hamilton County. TDOT reported the wreck around 9:28 p.m. near mile marker 180 and warned drivers to expect delays.
The closure affected westbound traffic as emergency crews and police handled the scene. Drivers were urged to use caution while the interstate remained blocked. The shutdown came at a time when even a short interruption on the route could ripple through nearby surface streets and exits.
Chattanooga police continue to examine what happened before impact
Police said the crash remains under investigation, and details are still being gathered about exactly how the motorcycle and tractor-trailer came together. The department has not said whether weather, road conditions or other vehicles contributed to the wreck.
At this stage, investigators are focused on reconstructing the moments before the collision and confirming the facts that led to the rider’s death. The fatality turned the earlier injury crash report into a death investigation, but police have not released further findings.
I-24 is a major freight and commuter route through Chattanooga
The crash happened on one of Chattanooga’s most heavily traveled corridors, where Interstate 24 carries daily commuter traffic and commercial trucks through the city. A collision in that area can quickly affect access to the Rossville Boulevard exit and surrounding roads in Hamilton County.
In this case, the westbound closure came during the night, but even late-hour crashes can create long delays for motorists and emergency crews. Officials did not immediately say when the lanes fully reopened.
What Chattanooga police have said so far
So far, police have confirmed four key points: the crash happened Monday night on I-24 westbound near Rossville Boulevard, the rider was 22 years old, the motorcyclist died at the scene, and investigators believe the motorcycle struck the back of a tractor-trailer at high speed.
That remains the extent of the public information as the case moves forward. Chattanooga police have not identified the dead rider, and no additional details about the tractor-trailer driver or any other vehicles have been released.
