AGFC: Paddlesports See National Rise in Fatalities

AGFC Issues Warning as Paddlesports Fatalities Rise

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC) is sounding the alarm about a disturbing trend in boating fatalities related to paddlesports. As the popularity of canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards continues to surge, so have the associated boating fatalities. In 2023, the U.S. Coast Guard reported 304 injuries requiring medical attention from paddle craft operators, resulting in a staggering 189 fatalities. This represents nearly one-third of all boating fatalities that year.

A major contributing factor in these fatalities is the lack of life jacket use. Of the nine deaths in boating accidents in Arkansas during 2023, six were due to drowning, and none of the victims were wearing life jackets. The AGFC emphasizes that wearing a life jacket is crucial for boating safety, employing the same laws as for motorboats.

Know Your Limits and Be Prepared

The commission also cautions about the limitations of certain vessels. The increasing availability of inexpensive kayaks and inflatable paddleboards, while making the sport more accessible, also brings additional risks. These vessels are often not designed to handle swift water and can put users in perilous situations. Paddlers are advised to consider their skill level and the craft’s capabilities, sticking to calm waters and staying near shore until they gain more experience.

Stay Safe on Arkansas’s Waterways

In light of these statistics and guidelines, the AGFC urges all paddlesport enthusiasts to heed these warnings and take the necessary precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience on Arkansas’s waterways. By doing so, we can all work together to reduce these alarming fatalities and preserve the natural beauty of our state.
