Arkansas Game and Fish Commission Opens Applications for 2024 Urban Archery Deer Hunts
Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC) has launched the registration process for the 2024-25 urban archery deer hunts. Bowhunters looking to participate in these special hunts can now apply to help manage deer populations, aid in feeding the needy in the state, and enjoy an early hunting opportunity.
These urban archery hunts play a crucial role in ensuring a balance between wildlife and human populations. Ralph Meeker, the deer program coordinator for the AGFC, explains that certain wildlife populations have grown significantly over the past five decades, leading to conflicts between deer and people. These hunts provide a cost-efficient method to manage deer numbers to acceptable social levels, as most deterrents do not work long-term and can be expensive for communities and landowners. AGFC coordinates with bowhunting organizations and city officials to organize the hunts, ensuring safety and the necessary hunting proficiency tests for participants.
Registration is currently open for the urban archery hunts, which will take place in several cities across Arkansas. The AGFC is working with the Arkansas Bowhunters Association, Bull Shoals Bowhunters Association, Hot Springs Village Property Owners Association, and Arkansas Hunters Feeding the Hungry to manage these hunting opportunities. All participants are required to pass the International Bowhunters Education Program and attend an orientation before receiving their urban hunt tags. The mandatory orientations cover rules and guidelines, while the proficiency tests ensure safe hunting practices.
