Arkansas Water Plan Update Progresses After First Phase Completion
Arkansas is moving forward with its Water Plan update after successfully completing the first phase. This significant milestone marks the beginning of a new era in the state’s water management and infrastructure development.
Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders initiated the update process through Executive Order 23-27, aiming to enhance the state’s water and land resources. The comprehensive review, conducted in partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, assessed the current plan to identify areas that require significant change.
The first phase involved seven stakeholder meetings held across the state from March to May 2024, as well as citizen feedback through a survey. This data has been crucial in shaping the objectives for the Arkansas Water Plan Update, which focuses on six key goals:
- Providing safe and reliable drinking water that supports public health.
- Supporting environmental and economic benefits through interstate agreements.
- Utilizing advanced science and technology for resource planning.
- Enhancing water supply, wastewater, and flood control infrastructure.
- Maintaining and improving water quality.
- Reducing the impacts of flooding on communities and the environment.
The update is being implemented in two phases, with the second phase set to commence before the end of 2024. Governor Sanders anticipates the revised plan will be finalized by December 31, underscoring her administration’s commitment to ensuring all Arkansans have access to safe and reliable drinking water.
