Benton High School recognized with Female Diversity Award

Benton High School Honored with AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award

Benton High School has made a significant stride in promoting gender equity in computer science education by receiving the AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award. This prestigious recognition is a testament to the school’s commitment to expanding access to Advanced Placement (AP) computer science courses for female students.

Expanding Access and Improving Representation

The AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award is given to schools that have either achieved 50% or higher female exam taker representation in one of or both AP computer science courses or have a percentage of female computer science exam takers that meets or exceeds that of the school’s female population. Benton High School has demonstrated remarkable success in this area, showcasing a genuine effort to bridge the gender gap in STEM education.

Increasing Participation and Future Careers

The number of female students taking the AP Computer Science Principles (CSP) exam has significantly increased. In 2024, over 60,000 female students took the AP CSP exam, more than four and a half times the number who tested in 2017. This substantial rise indicates a growing interest among girls in pursuing STEM fields, which are known for their high-paying job opportunities. For instance, the median annual wage for computer and mathematical occupations in 2023 was 4,200, though women only represented 26.9% of those employed in these fields[1].

Inspiring Young Women in Computer Science

AP CSP serves as a stepping stone for many students to pursue further advanced AP STEM coursework. Research conducted by the College Board highlights that female students who take AP CSP in high school are more than five times as likely to major in computer science in college compared to their peers who did not take the course. This figure underscores the importance of inclusive STEM education and its potential to shape the future of innovation and technology[1].

Celebrating Recognition and Future Aspirations

Benton High School’s achievement is not just a localized success but also a significant contribution to national efforts aimed at promoting gender equity in computer science education. The school’s leadership has expressed joy in congratulating their female AP computer science students and their teachers for their hard work and dedication. The recognition serves as an inspiration for all U.S. high schools to strive for similar achievements, ultimately driving a more inclusive and representative industry.

Community and School Board Appreciation

Benton High School is not just recognized for its academic achievements but also for its community spirit. January is celebrated as School Board Appreciation Month, honoring the unwavering dedication of school board members who give their time to shape the future of the district. The school appreciates the leadership and commitment of individuals like Tadd Farmer (President), Karen Hammer (Vice President), Boyd Goodner (Secretary), Justin Dorsey, Paul Childress, Luke Fulcher, and Randy Wright, who make a difference every day[1].

The AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award is a beacon of hope and achievement in a world where representation matters. Benton High School continues to pave the way for future generations of girls to excel in STEM fields, inspiring a brighter future filled with innovation and diverse talent.
