The Little Rock Zoo is commemorating its 100th year in grand style. It marks a century of conservation, education, and the enchantment of the animal kingdom.
Centennial Celebration
The zoo’s 100-year journey began in 1924 with just two animals, a timber wolf and a circus-trained brown bear. Today, it houses nearly 400 animals representing over 200 species, many of which are on the endangered list. The zoo has evolved into one of Arkansas’s most treasured institutions, playing a vital role in the state’s commitment to wildlife preservation.
As part of the Centennial Celebration, the Little Rock Zoo is inviting the community to share their treasured memories and photos of the zoo throughout the years. These contributions will be used to create a vibrant tapestry of memories that encapsulate the zoo’s history.
Supporters are requested to email their photos and memories to [email protected]. This collective effort will commemorate 100 years of the magic and wonder that the Little Rock Zoo has brought to generations of families.
Over-the-Jumps Carousel Centennial Celebration
The Little Rock Zoo is also celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Over-the-Jumps Carousel, a unique antique model that provides riders with the sensation of jumping hurdles. The carousel’s rich history began at the 1924 Arkansas State Fair and has been operating continuously ever since, earning it a prestigious Historic Award from the National Carousel Association.
The celebration will be held on September 10, 2024, and promises to be a night of enchantment and joy, with live entertainment from the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, complimentary carousel rides, historical exhibits, and a variety of fun games and activities for guests of all ages.
The event is generously sponsored by Centennial Bank and is sure to be an unforgettable evening honoring a cherished piece of Arkansas history.
Looking Ahead
The zoo’s commitment to conservation and education remains strong as it enters its second century. The community is invited to be part of this journey by supporting crucial initiatives, from animal care and conservation efforts to educational programs that inspire the next generation of wildlife enthusiasts. Together, the Little Rock Zoo and its community will ensure its legacy continues for generations to come.
