Early Deer Hunt Offers New Opportunity for Bowhunters

Arkansas bowhunters are in for a treat with a brand-new special early buck hunt set to take place from September 7 to 9. The hunt, which marks the first time a buck-only archery season has been held by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC) since its inception in 1915, aims to enhance the hunting experience by allowing hunters to harvest bucks “in velvet.” This unique opportunity comes after decades of bowhunters only being able to participate in special urban archery hunts, which began on September 1 to help control deer herds in a few areas.

This rare chance to harvest a buck in velvet arises just before the rutting season. Bucks shed their antlers each winter and begin to regrow them in the spring. By mid-September, most bucks have rubbed off the velvet coating, exposing their racks. For some hunters, the thrill of chasing deer in velvet adds an extra layer of excitement and challenge to their passion.

“Bucks only” is the rule of the game, with all hunters being allowed to take one legal buck, whether still in velvet or not. This buck counts towards the hunter’s seasonal limit, leaving one buck remaining in the statewide bag limit. The primary focus of this hunt is to increase hunting opportunities and generate early excitement for the season, unlike urban hunts, which focused on population control.

  • Women, who are the fastest-growing segment of hunters, are welcome to participate in the hunt.
  • Before embarking on this new adventure, it is crucial to ensure all necessary licenses are in order. Any valid license with a deer tag is acceptable for the early buck hunt. Hunters must also activate their deer tags through the AGFC app or online system for easy checking of harvested deer, even without mobile service. This leap in the application technology promises a more seamless experience for hunters.
