Arkansas Introduces New Buck-Only Archery Season
For the first time since the establishment of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission in 1915, bowhunters will have the opportunity to participate in a buck-only archery season. This new hunt, scheduled from September 7th to 9th, allows hunters to engage in a unique hunting experience by harvesting bucks while they still have their velvet antlers.
Historic Change in Hunting Regulations
The change in hunting regulations marks a significant shift for Arkansas bowhunters. Traditionally, the season opened on September 15, but with this new season, hunters will be able to start hunting earlier. This modification aims to increase hunting opportunities and enhance the overall hunting experience.
Why Velvet Bucks Matter
Hunting during the velvet stage, when bucks have soft, velvety coatings on their antlers, adds excitement to the hunt. This stage is only present during the early part of the buck’s antler growth. As the season progresses, the bucks will rub the velvet loose, exposing their fully formed racks. The experience of hunting during this stage is considered unique and thrilling for many hunters.
Licensing and Permitting
Only licensed archers can partake in this special season. The hunters are allowed to harvest one buck, which will count toward their seasonal limit. To ensure their eligibility, hunters should verify the status of their licenses and deer tags through the AGFC’s app or website.
Allowed Hunting Areas
This early buck-only hunt is restricted to private lands, AGFC-managed Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs), and AGFC WMAs designated leased lands. Lands owned by the U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are not accessible during this early season.
Preserving Velvet Integrity
Those who plan to harvest bucks in velvet should handle the antlers with care. Touching the antlers or allowing them to rub against surfaces during transport can damage the velvet. Hunters can apply Velvelock to help preserve the velvet until they can get the bucks to a taxidermist.
Additional Tips
For a comfortable and successful hunt, officials recommend using insect repellent containing DEET to protect against mosquitoes and other biting insects. Careful preparation and attention to the specific regulations are essential for making the most of this new opportunity for bowhunters.
Expert Insights
Bowhunters can learn from experienced hunters who have harvested velvet bucks in other states. Techniques like using trail cameras to identify patterns and setting up stands strategically can increase the chances of success.
Early Season Strategies
Knowing how to read signs, choosing the right stand locations, and understanding wind direction are all crucial factors in early season bowhunting. Hunting during the afternoons, particularly on established food plots, soybean fields, and freshly harvested cornfields, can also increase the chances of spotting and harvesting a choice velvet buck.
