Arkansas Outdoor Hall of Fame Recognizes Exceptional Contributions

On August 24, 2024, the Arkansas Game and Fish Foundation (AGFF) will host the 33rd Arkansas Outdoor Hall of Fame banquet at the Statehouse Convention Center in Little Rock. This year’s event aims to celebrate outstanding contributions to the state’s outdoors, recognizing remarkable individuals and organizations dedicated to preserving Arkansas’ natural heritage. Among the honorees are Colonel Shawn Daniel, executive director of Darby’s Warrior Support, and Steve Lochmann, a professor of Fisheries Management and Ecology at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.

Darby’s Warrior Support: Healing Through the Outdoors

Darby’s Warrior Support is an organization providing all-inclusive hunting and fishing opportunities for post-9/11 Special Operations combat veterans to help them cope with physical and emotional trauma. Colonel Shawn Daniel’s involvement has been instrumental in providing a safe environment for healing through camaraderie and understanding. His efforts have made significant differences in the lives of these veterans, demonstrating the therapeutic power of nature.

Steve Lochmann: A Life of Fisheries Management and Leadership

Professor Steve Lochmann’s incredible contributions to fisheries management and ecology span three decades. His teaching and research have produced numerous biologists for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission Fisheries Division. He has also received the Joe Hogan Award for his outstanding leadership and commitment to Arkansas’ fisheries and aquatic resources. This recognition is a testament to his enduring impact on the state’s conservation efforts.

The Mayfly Project: Bringing Joy to Foster Children

The Mayfly Project, launched in 2015, focuses on providing mentorship and fly-fishing opportunities to children in foster care. Through this program, children are introduced to local water ecosystems and develop lifelong hobbies. Founded by Jess and Laura Westbrook, The Mayfly Project has expanded across multiple states and will receive the Steve Smith Spirit of Giving Award for its dedication to helping foster children.

Legacy Award for Andy Simmons

The Legacy Award will be posthumously given to Andy Simmons. His remarkable generosity in naming AGFF in his estate resulted in one of the largest single gifts ever received by the Foundation. As a tribute, AGFF opened the Andy Simmons Outdoor Skills Farm in October 2023, ensuring Simmons’ legacy of conservation and outdoor recreation for future generations.
