Arkansas Food Bank Combats Rising Hunger
Arkansas, ranked as the worst state for food insecurity, faces alarming numbers. A recent USDA report found that nearly 19% of Arkansas households were affected by food insecurity, the highest percentage in the nation. This translates to 3 out of every 16 households who went hungry in 2023.
Throughout September, the Arkansas Food Bank is calling on residents to take action during Hunger Action Month. An estimated 13.5% of American homes experience food insecurity, making it essential to raise awareness and inspire solutions. Hunger is not just a local issue; nationally, 18 million households struggle to access nutritious food.
The economic burden felt by households is stark, with many struggling to provide even the most basic necessities. Food deserts add to the problem, where citizens must travel significant distances to access healthy food options. Arkansas is particularly affected, with 62 out of 75 counties identified as food deserts.
Despite the bleak numbers, there are ways to engage in the fight against hunger. Community involvement, volunteering, and supporting organizations like the Arkansas Food Bank can bring lasting change. Everyone can play a role – whether through donating resources, spreading the word, or participating in food drives.
The Arkansas Food Bank, along with its partners like Walmart and Sam’s Club, has initiated the Fight Hunger. Spark Change. campaign. Throughout April and May, customers can contribute by purchasing participating products, round-ups at check-out, and direct donations. Every gesture counts in combatting this pervasive crisis.
Organizations across Arkansas are working together to alleviate food insecurity. The state government has implemented initiatives such as the Summer EBT program for school children and SNAP benefits for eligible households. Additionally, local organizations and communities are addressing the root causes to ensure everyone has access to nutritious food.
As the largest hunger relief organization in the state, the Arkansas Food Bank is dedicated to connecting people, resources, and food to those in need. Together, Arkansans can change the narrative of hunger in their state and ensure a more equitable food future for all.
