Little Rock Zoo to Celebrate Unique Carousel

Little Rock Zoo Celebrates Unique Carousel’s 100th Birthday

This year, the Little Rock Zoo is throwing a party like no other as it celebrates the 100th birthday of its iconic “Over-the-Jumps” carousel. With its undulating wooden platform that gives riders the sensation of jumping hurdles as they spin around, this historic carousel stands out from other merry-go-rounds.

A Century of Joy and Memories

First appearing in Arkansas at the 1924 Arkansas State Fair, the carousel has become a treasured piece of local history. In 2008, it found its permanent home at the zoo, where it continues to delight visitors with its nostalgic charm. Over the years, the carousel has not only entertained countless families but also provided a rich cultural legacy.

Restoration and Preservation Efforts

The carousel’s journey to preservation was not without challenges. In 1942, Tom Fuzzell saved it from destruction, and later, the Friends of the Carousel formed to ensure its survival. The National Carousel Association awarded it the prestigious Historic Award in 2020.

Commemoration Plans

To mark this significant milestone, the zoo is hosting a magical evening celebration which includes live performances by the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, free carousel rides, historical exhibits, and refreshments. Families of all ages are invited to join in this unforgettable event.
