Little Rock Zoo’s ‘Over-the-Jumps’ Carousel turns 100

The Timeless Magic of Over-the-Jumps Carousel

A cherished historic treasure in Little Rock is marking a major milestone: the Over-the-Jumps Carousel at the Little Rock Zoo is celebrating its 100th anniversary. This unique antique carousel, built by the Spillman Engineering Corp. of North Tonawanda, New York, in 1924, has captured the hearts of generations of Arkansans. With its undulating wooden platform that simulates the sensation of jumping hurdles, the carousel offers an experience unlike any other.

A Journey of Memories

The Over-the-Jumps Carousel first made its debut at the 1924 Arkansas State Fair. Its history is interwoven with that of the state, as it has been a beloved attraction for families over the years. After being saved from destruction by Little Rock resident Tom Fuzzell in 1942, the carousel went on to delight visitors at War Memorial Amusement Park. Today, it stands as the only fully operational merry-go-round of its kind in the world.

Restoration and Preservation

The carousel has undergone extensive restoration efforts. After being added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991, a dedicated team led by expert restorer Becky Witsell worked meticulously to remove over 30 layers of paint and reveal the original colors of the horses and chariots. The Friends of the Carousel played a crucial role in securing funds and leading the restoration efforts. Today, the carousel continues to require regular upkeep and maintenance to maintain its splendid condition.

Celebrating a Century

To commemorate this momentous occasion, the Little Rock Zoo is hosting a grand celebration. Scheduled for September 10, the event promises to be a night of enchantment, featuring live entertainment, free carousel rides, historic exhibits, and a variety of games and activities. This once-in-a-lifetime occasion invites the community to come together and share their cherished memories of the Over-the-Jumps Carousel.

Sharing the Memories

As part of the centennial celebration, the zoo is inviting visitors to contribute to a collective tapestry of memories. By sharing photos and stories via email at [email protected], guests can help weave together a century of joyous experiences on the carousel. This shared journey down memory lane will serve as a testament to the enduring magic of the Over-the-Jumps Carousel.

Enduring Legacy

The Over-the-Jumps Carousel has received national recognition for its historic significance, including the prestigious Historic Award from the National Carousel Association in 2020. Its restoration and maintenance are a testament to the dedication of the Little Rock Zoo, the Friends of the Carousel, and the skilled artisans at the Little Rock Repair Shop.
