Saline County Fair Returns, Continuing over 100 Years of Tradition

The Saline County Fair, one of the oldest continual annual fairs in Arkansas, has returned for another year of festivities. Since its inception in 1908, the fair has grown and evolved, featuring a robust lineup of events, activities, and exhibits.

Today, the fair includes a parade, a full rodeo, livestock sales, games, carnival rides, contests, live music, and exhibits showcasing locally made products. Established by the Saline County Fair Association, the event continues to attract large crowds every year.

In its early years, the Saline County Fair faced various challenges. During World War II, it faced the threat of cancellation due to economic reasons, but the association was determined to keep it going. In 1952, there were issues with alleged gambling operations at the fairgrounds, leading to a crackdown and stricter regulations.

Over time, the fair has undergone significant expansions and changes. In 1950, it moved to rented tents at Tyndall Park in Benton. Eventually, the fairgrounds were expanded to include new buildings, such as the Aluminum Company of America’s (Alcoa) donation of a 75′ x 100′ exhibits building in 1953.

Some other popular events in Benton include Old Fashioned Day, which takes place in October. This event features a zombie parade, coffin races, street dances, and a beer garden, as well as activities for children. It is held in support of the Benton Senior Wellness Center, providing much-needed funds for social events and services for local seniors.

This year, the Saline County Fair is running from September 3-7. It will include events such as the 2024 Saline County Fair Queen Pageant, the parade, and rodeo competitions. There will also be cultural art exhibits, livestock and rodeo events throughout the week, along with carnival rides and other exhibitions.

The 2024 Saline County Fair Queen Pageant is scheduled to take place on August 31st, featuring divisions for both boys and girls. The fair parade will begin at 6:00 p.m. on September 3rd at CW Lewis Stadium and will travel through historic downtown Benton. All entries must register online in advance.
