Community Archaeology Project at UA Little Rock
UA Little Rock has embarked on a dynamic community archaeology project designed to illuminate the rich history hidden beneath the campus grounds. The project, titled the UA Little Rock Garden Site Archaeological Project, invites local residents to join forces with students and faculty, enhancing their understanding of the area’s past.
The initiative began during the Fall 2023 semester with the assistance of students enrolled in the Archaeological Investigations class, who located the foundation of the former Safeway Ice Cream Plant and uncovered over 400 associated historical artifacts. This hands-on archaeological fieldwork and archival research aims to expose the campus’s story and offer a unique learning experience to the community.
Uncovering Local Secrets
The absence of extensive archaeological exploration in Little Rock underscores the significance of this project, which delves into a previously unexplored dimension of the city’s history. Participants stand to gain a wealth of knowledge about archaeology and how archaeological practices uncover details about past human societies.
Learning Opportunities Ahead
Volunteers can participate in the project during the 2024-25 academic year, engaging in activities such as shovel and auger testing, excavation, and neglecting archival research. These inclusive learning opportunities will allow community members to gain a nuanced understanding of archaeological practices, as well as contribute to the growth of historical knowledge about the campus and Little Rock. No prior experience is required to participate in the archaeological project.
Exhibiting Discoveries
Plans are in place for an upcoming exhibit showcasing the artifacts unearthed by the project in 2025. The exhibit promises to bring the historical story directly to the people, fostering a sense of community and shared knowledge.
Project Support
Financial support for the project comes from the Arkansas Humanities Council, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the College of Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences, and Education at UA Little Rock. This collaborative effort underscores the importance of history and community in understanding our shared experiences.
With everyone invited to participate and discover, the future of this project holds immense potential, putting the power of history directly in the hands of the Little Rock community.
