UAMS to Host Third Annual Girlology Session

UAMS Prepares for Third Annual Girlology Session

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) is gearing up to host its third annual Girlology session, a crucial event aimed at helping young girls navigate the complex and often daunting process of puberty. This session builds on the success of previous events, which have seen more than 1,000 families attend since its inception in August 2022.

During these sessions, girls between the ages of 8 and 14, accompanied by a parent or caregiver, will delve into essential topics such as growth and development, bras and bra shopping, hygiene and hair management, nutrition and growth, menstruation and menstrual hygiene, respect for self and others, moods and emotions, and internet safety and curiosity. The comprehensive nature of these sessions intends to instill confidence in these young attendees as they embark on this significant stage of life.

The 2.5-hour course is led by a team of experienced physicians from UAMS’ Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, ensuring that the information provided is medically accurate. This approach not only educates the girls but also fosters a safe space for open discussions about topics that are often tough for parents and children to discuss.

UAMS’ commitment to this initiative is evident in the dedication to creating a shared experience for both the girls and their accompanying adults. The event’s continued growth is a testament to the importance of such programs in helping families navigate the challenges of puberty.

The upcoming session, taking place on September 22, will be held in the 12th floor auditorium of the Jackson T. Stephens Spine & Neurosciences Institute. The cost is , with scholarships available for those who may struggle to afford the fee. Interested participants can find more information and register at uams.health/girlology.

With each session, UAMS reiterates its mission to provide a supportive environment where young girls can gain the knowledge and confidence they need to tackle the complexities of puberty head-on. The university’s continued efforts in this area demonstrate its unyielding dedication to the health and well-being of its community.
