Achievements of outstanding African-American alumni from various institutions continue to be recognized and celebrated. These individuals, representing a wide range of fields, have made significant impacts in their chosen careers and communities.

Recognized for Career Success

One notable example is Bettye Poole, a University of Evansville alumna who holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Liberal Studies and Public Administration respectively. She served as the Homeless Liaison for the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation and co-chaired the Board of Directors for the National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth. Her tireless efforts have led to numerous awards for her service in Evansville.

Legal and Educational Excellence

Another impressive figure is Dr. Rose Mays, who graduated from the University of Evansville in 1967 with a B.S. in Nursing. She went on to earn a Master’s degree in Education and retired from teaching at the Indiana University School of Nursing. Dr. Mays was recognized with the UE Medal of Honor in 2008 for her dedication to her students and contributions to the field of education.

Impact on the Community

Fred Duncan, a 1949 Evansville College alum, left a lasting impact on his community. He played a crucial role in integrating sports teams, removing racist signs from the local Greyhound bus station, and ending discriminatory policies on public tennis courts. As a charter member of the first interracial fraternity, Pi Kappa fraternity, Duncan’s activism has brought significant change to the Evansville area.

The University of Alabama’s Black Alumni Association (UA BAA) has been actively supporting students and fostering a spirit of giving. Events like “Houndstooth and Heels” and the “Greek Giving Challenge” have raised substantial funding for scholarships.
