Bentonville City Council approves storm debris removal contract of about .1 million

Bentonville City Council Takes Crucial Steps for Storm Debris Removal

The Bentonville City Council held an emergency meeting on June 3 to address the widespread damage caused by recent storms. The council approved an emergency declaration to facilitate the storm clean-up process, enabling the city to work with outside companies and pave the way for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) reimbursement.

Comprehensive Debris Removal Efforts

As part of the approved emergency declaration, the city will work with a consultant to monitor the debris removal process, ensuring that all requirements for FEMA reimbursement are met strictly. Additionally, a contract with a debris removal company will expedite the cleanup process. This multi-pronged approach will help the city tackle the massive amounts of debris, including massive uprooted trees, in an efficient manner.

Local Debris Removal and Disposal Options

Residents can take advantage of the city’s Compost Facility, located at 2000 NW A Street, which is open from 7 am to 7 pm for disposing of vegetative debris. Proof of residency is required. Furthermore, the city is accepting bids for a contractor to assist with debris removal, ensuring that the cleanup process is handled responsibly and meets all FEMA reimbursement requirements.

Community-Wide Clean-Up Initiatives

The city is set to launch a comprehensive clean-up effort, initially focusing on vegetative debris but eventually expanding to include construction and demolition waste, hazardous waste, and household items. Residents are advised to separate their debris and place it at the curb, where it will be collected separately. The clean-up effort is expected to involve multiple passes in each area.

Important Reminders for Residents

– The Compost Facility is open until further notice, accepting leaves, limbs, branches, and logs up to 6 ft. in length and 30-inch diameter.
– Residents should schedule a pickup for large household item disposal and use designated drop-off sites for hazardous waste.
– Burn permits are available, subject to specific requirements, to assist with storm debris clean-up.

Federal Assistance Available

The Federal Government has approved a Major Disaster Declaration, allowing Benton County residents to apply for federal assistance through FEMA. Application deadlines and details can be found on the FEMA website.
