Bentonville Unveils Phases of Ambitious Quilt of Parks Project
Bentonville’s “Quilt of Parks” project is taking significant strides towards transforming the city’s downtown experience. This visionary approach aims to connect six parks and public spaces via a new linear park known as the A Street Promenade. Among the spaces being revitalized are Lawrence Plaza, the Bentonville Square, Dave Peel Park, Town Branch Park, The Commons, and the Activity Center Park. By the end of September 2023, both Town Branch Park and A Street Promenade were poised to begin construction, with an estimated 18-24 months to complete the entire project.
The Quilt of Parks project, funded in part by the Walton Family Foundation, is designed to enhance the pedestrian and cyclist experience in downtown Bentonville. Upon completion, the project promises to create a cohesive and inviting environment, integrating sculptures, gathering spaces, plazas, mini-stages, and ample outdoor seating. The linear promenade will meander through the downtown area, passing by landmarks such as Compton Gardens and the 21C Museum and Hotel.
In recent developments, the second phase of the project is set to open, which will convert a section of the downtown area in front of the courthouse into a walkable promenade. This phase follows the opening of a freshly renovated Lawrence Plaza, now equipped with an ice rink for the winter season. Future additions include new playground equipment at Dave Peel Park and an amphitheater space for public events.
The full scope of the Quilt of Parks project includes various components that will significantly impact downtown Bentonville. The A Street Promenade will be a pedestrian-only zone, with different blocks featuring unique architectural uses, including event spaces, and public artworks. The project aims to create retail opportunities, enhance economic development, and provide a hub for residents and visitors alike to explore and enjoy.
