Bentonville Woman, Gentry Man Accused of Living in Man’s Unoccupied Home

The latest news from Northwest Arkansas brings a case of alleged trespassing and unauthorized residence. A Bentonville woman and a Gentry man are facing charges after being found living in a man’s unoccupied home in Maysville, where they were apprehended by authorities for residential burglary.

The homeowner, who is currently undergoing treatment, was alerted to the situation by his caretaker, who informed the Benton County Sheriff’s Office of the unauthorized occupants. When confronted, the couple claimed they had lawfully taken possession of the property by paying its property taxes and maintaining the premises.

The duo’s actions did not stop at simply occupying the residence. Authorities found a burn pile next to the garage containing the homeowner’s personal belongings, including documents and home decor, indicating a deliberate destruction of property. The caretaker reported that the homeowner was experiencing great distress, having suffered a heart attack due to the stress of strangers in his home.

The suspects, Kelly DeShields and Matthew Villagran, both arrested on June 5, are being held on bonds of ,000 and ,000 respectively and are set to appear in court on July 15. This case strains credulity as it raises questions about the ease with which individuals can appropriate others’ property under the guise of legal ownership.
