‘Knowing the West’ opens this weekend at Crystal Bridges with public events

Crystal Bridges Unveils “Knowing the West” This Weekend

This weekend, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art is set to open its new traveling exhibition, “Knowing the West.” This groundbreaking show celebrates the American West as a culturally rich and complex place, featuring a diverse array of voices and perspectives.

The exhibition aims to challenge long-held beliefs and perceptions of the American West, shedding new light on the region’s history through a collection of approximately 120 objects. These objects span textiles, baskets, pottery, paintings, prints, beadwork, sculptures, and saddles, all created before the 1930s. By focusing on pre-modern works, the curators allow the art to speak for itself, rather than relying on contemporary artists to provide a critical lens.

Curated by Mindy Besaw and Jami Powell, a citizen of the Osage Nation, “Knowing the West” is notable for its emphasis on the significant contributions of women and Native American artists. Over half of the works on display were created by women artists, and half are by Native American artists. This deliberate focus highlights their crucial roles in shaping the American West.
