AGFC prepares final Lake Conway cleanup of summer

It’s time to make one final push towards a cleaner and more beautiful Lake Conway. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission is organizing its last community-wide cleanup before the sweltering summer heat sets in.

Putting everything they’ve learned from the previous efforts into action, the commission is ensuring that every necessary detail is taken care of to make this event as successful as possible. This includes the strategic placement of dumpsters at key access points, making it easier for volunteers to dispose of the collected trash. dumpster locations include Pierce Creek Access, the Highway 89 Bridge Access, the Paradise Road ArDOT Pull-off, Lawrence Landing, Adams Lake Access, and Palarm Creek Access.

Cleaning Up Tons of Trash

Across the first two cleanups, volunteers and AGFC staff have made a significant impact. They’ve managed to remove an impressive 36 tons of trash and about 20 tons of tires from the lakebed. Much of this debris is remnants of storms and tornadoes that hit the lake area years ago, highlighting the importance of these efforts in recuperating the region’s natural beauty.

Preparation is Key

To tackle the task safely and efficiently, volunteers are advised to wear heavy gloves to protect themselves from sharp metal and broken glass. They should also wear rubber boots, calf-length if possible, to keep their feet dry in the sometimes soggy shoreline. Bug spray and sunscreen are also crucial to ward off the elements.

Support from the Community

The Arkansas Game and Fish Foundation has generously donated two 0 gift cards to Academy Sports and Outdoors. These will be given away in a drawing among participants who register online and join an AGFC group cleanup. This added incentive aims to encourage even more community members to take part in the cleanup efforts and celebrate their dedication to preserving Lake Conway’s ecosystem.

Finalize the Cleanup

This final cleanup is a crucial stage in the entire renovation process. As the lakebed continues to grow vegetation, it will become increasingly difficult to access and remove litter. With the combined effort of local residents, anglers, and conservation enthusiasts, Lake Conway can be transformed into a beautiful and thriving environment for both inhabitants and visitors alike.
