Round Rock Public Library Announces Young Author Writing Contest Winners
The Round Rock Public Library has announced the winners of its 2024 Young Author Writing Contest. The contest saw a total of 148 entries, with young authors submitting original microfiction stories and poems in two age categories: ages 8-12 and ages 13-18. The winning entries were judged by the library’s Teen Advisory Board and were announced on May 1, 2024.
Winning Entries
In the Tween category (ages 8-12), Sophia Rangel Santana took the top prize for her entry, “The Pirate Queen.” Riya Pandya and Sahana Kameswar placed second and third, respectively. Among teens aged 13-18, Anna Lau’s “The Hidden Truth” took the top spot, followed by Yejin Cheon’s “Nothing Gold Can Stay” in second place, and Kelly Shen’s “Soar or Else” in third place.
Judging and Guidelines
The contest was judged by the Round Rock Public Library’s Teen Advisory Board, using a rubric to assess the writing entries. To qualify, entries had to include specific details, such as the writer’s name, age, and library card number. Winners received gift cards from Barnes and Noble, and their work was published on the library’s website. All entries were included in a print book that became part of the library’s local author collection for youth.
Annual Young Author Writing Contest
The contest was part of the annual writing events hosted by the Round Rock Public Library, which included a teen writing group, a haiku bookmark workshop, and a local author event. The library accepted submissions between March 1, 2024, and March 30, 2024.
