Conway Romps Past Springdale in 6A State Tournament
Conway dominated Springdale in the second round of the Class 6A girls state tournament, winning 65-31. Emerie Bohanon led the Lady Wampus Cats with 21 points, 14 of which were scored in the second half. Amiya Taylor contributed 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Alexis Cox finished with 12 points, 15 rebounds, and 5 steals. Conway’s defense excelled, holding Springdale to 16.7% shooting and forcing 18 turnovers. The Lady Wampus Cats have won 13 consecutive games and advanced to the semifinals.
Defensive Strength Paves the Way for Conway’s Victory
Coach Ashley Hutchcraft attributed Conway’s defensive performance to their ability to adjust to the officiating and Springdale’s tactics. Conway utilized a zone defense effectively, causing issues for Springdale. On offense, Conway attacked consistently, converting defensive pressure into free throws and second-chance opportunities. Their activity on defense aided their offense, ultimately leading to their decisive win.
Conway Meets Cabot in Semifinals
With their win over Springdale, Conway advanced to face Cabot in the semifinals. Cabot had a close match against Fayetteville, winning 59-54. Candace Cunningham led Cabot with 18 points and 15 rebounds, while Jaycie Cook scored 15 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 steals. Conway’s strong defense and offense will be tested again in their match against Cabot.
Conway Routs Bentonville in Football
Conway’s football team also saw success, defeating Bentonville 55-21 at John McConnell Stadium. Grayson Wilson led the Wampus Cats with 328 yards passing, 4 touchdowns, and 1 interception. Trey Harris had 115 yards rushing and 1 touchdown, while also catching 3 passes for 37 yards and a score. Coach Buck James praised Bentonville for their commitment to playing strong opponents within the state, noting that these intra-state rivalries strengthen Arkansas football.
