Conway School Board Seeks Applications for Zone 5 Seat
The Conway Public Schools Board of Directors is currently accepting applications to fill the vacant Zone 5 position on the school board. This move comes after a significant shift in the board’s composition following recent elections.
The previous holder of the Zone 5 seat, Bill Milburn, a retired police major, took back the seat in the March 2024 election, defeating former Army combat veteran and roofing businessman Trey Geier. Milburn’s win marked a conservative sweep in the election, with Trip Leach, the chief financial officer of New Life Church, also securing a seat.
The recent election results have raised concerns among progressive residents, with some expressing worries about the potential impact on the school district. Notably, six of the seven board members now either voted for or later supported the banning of two books with LGBQT+ themes and restrictions on restrooms for transgender students.
In light of these developments, the call for applications for the Zone 5 seat presents an opportunity for new voices to join the board. The Conway Public Schools District will be conducting a thorough process to identify the best candidate to fill this position and represent the community.
The school district recently conducted its 2nd annual City-Wide Crisis Drill on August 8th, 2024, at Simon Middle School, demonstrating its commitment to safety and emergency preparedness. As the district moves forward, the new board member will be integral in shaping its vision and policies.
Applications for the Zone 5 seat will be reviewed and considered by the Conway Public Schools Board of Directors. The district encourages interested individuals to apply and contribute to the educational leadership of the community.
