The Conway school board has recently recognized the Wampus Cat Pride award recipients. This award acknowledges the outstanding contributions and achievements of students and staff within the Conway School System. The Wampus Cat mascot, adopted by Conway High School in 1922, symbolizes the school’s spirit and unrelenting pursuit of excellence. With six legs and glowing eyes, the Wampus Cat represents the speed, strength, and determination of its students and faculty.
As a testament to its pride, the school’s sports teams, such as the baseball team, have shown remarkable performances, like winning the 2022 6A State Baseball Championship. Additionally, the Wampus Cat Speech and Debate team has taken on notable challenges, competing against sixty schools from twelve states in the New Orleans tournament.
The Get to Know Your School Board Members series featuring Trey Geier highlights the continued efforts of school administrators to deepen their connection with the students and promote a sense of community. By acknowledging the Pride award recipients, the board emphasizes the value it places on the hard work and commitment of its members.
This acknowledgment extends beyond the sports and debate teams. It also recognizes the individual stories of students who have been impacted by the legend of the Wampus Cat, like the personal accounts of encounters with mysterious cats in rural areas or the fearsome tales passed down through Native American folklore. As one of only six schools globally to bear this unique name, Conway continues to embody the spirit of the Wampus Cat in all its endeavors.
This recognition also serves as a celebration of the school’s rich heritage, rooted in both local culture and historical accounts. From the early descriptions of the Wampus Cat as an imaginary creature explaining strange night noises to its symbolic use as a powerful and elusive creature, the Wampus Cat remains an integral part of Conway’s identity.
