Crowds Break Records Across the Country
For years, Nebraska has held the record for the largest attendance at a “College GameDay” event. This record was set in 2001 with 15,800 attendees. However, in 2010, the University of Missouri (Mizzou) secured the new high mark with 18,000 fans present.
Recently, another milestone was achieved in volleyball. On August 31, 2023, the University of Nebraska volleyball team broke the world attendance record for a women’s sporting event. This historic match saw an astonishing 92,003 fans at Memorial Stadium, surpassing the previous record of 91,648 set during a UEFA Women’s Champions League soccer semifinal in 2022.
The volleyball program at Nebraska has a rich history of successful attendance. In 2021, they previously held the record for the largest crowd at an NCAA volleyball match with 18,755 fans attending the national championship match against Wisconsin. The Cornhuskers left a lasting impression on the sporting world, showcasing the dedication and passion of their fans.
In addition to Nebraska, other universities have also witnessed record-breaking attendance in various sports. On October 16, 2023, the Iowa Hawkeyes females basketball team set an NCAA single-game attendance record with 55,646 attendees at Kinnick Stadium. This historic matchup demonstrated the growing popularity of women’s sports and the enthusiasm of college sports fans.
James Madison University (JMU) also made history with the largest crowd ever at a “College GameDay” event. An incredible 26,000 fans gathered at the Quad, breaking the previous attendance record and showcasing JMU’s dedication to its football program.
These record-breaking events across different universities highlight the ever-increasing enthusiasm and participation in collegiate sports, proving that these events can unite and inspire entire communities.
