Maumelle High School Launches Innovative Credit Union Academy
Maumelle High School, in partnership with Telcoe Federal Credit Union, has opened a unique and interactive credit union academy. This innovative approach to education aims to provide students with hands-on learning opportunities within the financial services sector.
Telcoe Academy of Business & Service
As part of the Academies of Central Arkansas, the Telcoe Academy of Business and Service at Maumelle High School exposes students to careers in banking and financial services beginning in their freshman year. From learning about cash handling and customer service to managing a bank account, students gain a thorough understanding of banking operations.
Financial Education
Telcoe Federal Credit Union actively supports Maumelle High School by providing financial education through workshops and classroom sessions. Staff members work closely with teachers, empowering students to develop practical skills such as balancing school-based credit union accounts, handling deposits and withdrawals, and understanding key financial concepts.
Banking Careers
The Telcoe Academy of Business & Service offers students a comprehensive overview of the banking industry, including involvement in marketing, loan applications, and information technology. This exposure prepares students for either college-bound or non-college-bound careers in banking, fostering employability and financial literacy.
Real-World Application
As part of the program, selected students are given a Summer job at Telcoe branches. Once they complete the fellowship, they qualify to work in the student-led branch during the school year. This real-world application allows students to apply their skills and develop tangible experience in the banking industry.
The Hornet Branch
The student-led credit union, known as the “Hornet Branch,” is located on the second floor of Maumelle High School. Operating during lunch hours, the branch is run by students alongside school staff, providing hands-on experience in various roles such as account services, loan services, marketing, and more.
Enhanced Learning Opportunities
The partnership between Telcoe Federal Credit Union and Maumelle High School also includes enhanced learning opportunities such as industry field trips, job shadowing, career mentoring, and internship opportunities. This comprehensive approach aims to better equip students for their future careers.
