UCA Receives Million Grant for GEAR UP Program
Recent news highlights the University of Central Arkansas (UCA) achieving a notable milestone. For the first time, UCA was selected to receive a significant grant of million from the U.S. Department of Education, which will be utilized for the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) initiative.
This seven-year grant, named the GEAR UP Arkansas College Ready Navigator (GUAR-CRN) project, focuses on enhancing college preparedness for students from low-income backgrounds. Targeted districts span seven counties across Arkansas and include 15 schools and more than 3,400 students. The grant strives to increase enrollment in postsecondary education by providing student services, educator development, and family education.
The GUAR-CRN project is designed to address both emotional and financial concerns that often discourage students from pursuing higher education. According to Charlotte Parham, principal investigator and associate professor in the UCA College of Education, middle school students often question their ability to attend college due to financial constraints and doubt about belonging on a college campus. The program aims to broaden their possibilities and provide support necessary for success.
Program Goals and Activities
-
The GUAR-CRN project includes three primary areas: student services, educator development, and family education.
-
Activities cover preparation for the ACT, financial literacy, and navigating college applications. Additionally, the program will offer students the opportunity to attend college planning and career exploration workshops.
-
Training and resources will be provided to school districts and educators to enhance support systems.
A milestone that underscores UCA’s commitment to access and equity in education, this grant and its subsequent programs will undoubtedly create a lasting impact on the state’s education landscape.
Announcement and Partnerships
The grant announcement was well-received by school leaders and education officials. UCA President Houston Davis highlighted the university’s dedication to removing barriers to higher education.
“UCA is proud to provide leadership in this space as we work with partners statewide to break down barriers to and open up access to postsecondary education.”
Key partners for the initiative include the Arkansas Department of Education, the Arkansas Department of Higher Education, and several educational organizations. In addition, a kickoff event was held on November 27 at UCA’s campus to bring together leaders from the participating school districts and program administrators.
Long-term Benefits
The GEAR UP Arkansas College Ready Navigator project marks a significant step forward in addressing the state’s low college graduation rates. By targeting students at an early stage and providing sustained support, this initiative aims to have a lasting impact on the future of Arkansas’s education.
