Arkansas to receive more than 1,000 in unclaimed money settlement with Delaware

Arkansas Receives Over 1,000 in Unclaimed Money Settlement

Arkansas will receive more than 1,000 in unclaimed money as part of a settlement with Delaware. The settlement resolves a long-standing dispute over uncashed money orders issued by MoneyGram.

The dispute began in 2016 when Arkansas and 29 other states sued Delaware, claiming that Delaware had incorrectly collected hundreds of millions of dollars in unclaimed funds. The U.S. Supreme Court ultimately sided with Arkansas in 2023, ruling that the funds should be returned to the states where the money orders were purchased.

Under the settlement, Delaware will transfer 2 million to the coalition states, while MoneyGram will distribute an additional million among all 50 states. Arkansas residents will be able to reclaim their funds deposited into the state auditor’s unclaimed property fund.

Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin praised the settlement, saying it brings to a close nearly eight years of litigation over unclaimed official checks and will return over 0 million to the people of Arkansas, the coalition states, and other states. Griffin expressed his pride in the work done on the case and his gratitude to coalition partners from California, Texas, and Wisconsin.

The settlement marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to reunite individuals with their lost and forgotten funds. With the funds being returned to their rightful states, the process of reuniting individuals with their money will now begin.
