Former AGFC Director Honored with Inaugural Arkansas Medal of Freedom
On January 15, 2025, Gov. Sarah Sanders honored Dallas County Sheriff Mike Knoedl with the inaugural Arkansas Medal of Freedom at her State of the State address. A ceremony that not only recognized Knoedl’s dedicated service to Arkansas but also celebrated the bravery he demonstrated during a tragic shooting incident in June 2024.
In June 2024, a gunman opened fire at a Fordyce supermarket, leaving four people dead and nine injured. It was in the immediate aftermath of this incident that Knoedl demonstrated exceptional bravery. Within minutes of the first shots being fired, Knoedl and his officers arrived on the scene and provided critical support to the victims.
“Those on the scene know that it could have been many, many more if not for the action of brave heroes like Dallas County Sheriff Mike Knoedl,” Sanders said during the ceremony. “He and his officers were on the scene returning fire to the gunman, distracting him and allowing victims to find cover and escape.”
Knoedl’s actions during the shooting were not only courageous but also exemplary of his character. He not only ensured immediate safety but also organized transportation and aid for the wounded. In the days and weeks following the incident, he helped raise tens of thousands of dollars for the victims and their families, demonstrating his commitment to their well-being.
“I had no idea this was coming, and there were a lot of individuals involved in what happened that day,” Knoedl said humbly. “I was overwhelmed by the support to the victims and their families. People stepped up and raised almost ,000 to help them through what was the most difficult time in their lives.”
The Arkansas Medal of Freedom was created to recognize individuals who have distinguished themselves in service to the state and its citizens. Knoedl, with his long-standing career in law enforcement and his unwavering dedication to the community, is an exemplary recipient of this honor.
Sheriff Mike Knoedl began his career in 1985 as a Perry County wildlife officer with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. He later rose through the ranks, serving as the Enforcement Division’s chief, Deputy Director, and ultimately Director from 2012 to 2016. His extensive service and exemplary behavior make him a fitting recipient of the inaugural Arkansas Medal of Freedom.

Sarah Sanders’ Gratitude Towards Knoedl
Gov. Sarah Sanders’ appreciation for Knoedl’s service was evident during her address. She thanked him for embodying the spirit of selfless service that the Arkansas Medal of Freedom aims to honor. The ceremony itself was a celebration of his character and actions during times of crisis.
“Immediately after they apprehended the gunman, Mike organized transportation and aid for the wounded, and in the days and weeks after he helped raise tens of thousands of dollars for victims and their families,” Sanders emphasized. “I cannot think of a better person to receive the first Medal of Freedom than Sheriff Knoedl.”
