Artists Selected for Juried Group Show at Walton Arts Center

A prestigious juried group show has recently taken place at the Walton Arts Center. The event saw artists submit their works, vying for a spot in the exhibition. Selecting the final pieces for the show fell to the skilled jurors, who carefully examined each entry, taking into account both artistic merit and cohesive themes.

The jurors’ challenging task involved balancing the variety of styles and mediums presented. Ann Johnston, one of the jurors for the Fiber Arts XI exhibition at Sebastopol Center for the Arts, explained that her goal was to choose pieces that excelled in both design and execution, and possessed a unified underlying concept. This quest for cohesion and excellence led to a diverse range of artworks being included in the final selection.

Artist etiquette and rules were also significant components. Annie Track reminded artists of the importance of professional behavior, emphasizing that adhering to submission guidelines and show schedules was crucial. Artists who neglected these conventions sometimes found themselves excluded from the competition or encountered difficulties in their participation.

Another vital aspect was the subjective nature of the jurors’ decisions. Bonnie Clearwater, in her article on juried shows, emphasized that jurors bring their unique perspectives and priorities to the selection process. This individuality often led to surprises and varying outcomes, highlighting the difference in how different jurors might evaluate the same artwork.

In addition to visual art, the Walton Arts Center also hosted the VoiceJam Competition, featuring a cappella performances. Auditions for both vocal groups and individual singers were open to a wide range of talents. This event encompassed not only the competition itself but also workshops and masterclasses led by experts in the field, such as Deke Sharon.
