TheatreSquared Brings a Timeless Classic to Life: “A Raisin in the Sun”
“A Raisin in the Sun,” the iconic play by Lorraine Hansberry, is now being performed at TheatreSquared. This powerful production was first seen on Broadway in 1959, making it the first play written by a Black woman to debut on the iconic stage. Sixty-five years later, the timeless masterpiece continues to resonate with audiences, exploring the struggles and dreams of the Younger family on Chicago’s South Side amidst racial segregation.
The play delves into the diverse aspirations and conflicts within the Younger family across three generations. The story revolves around a life insurance policy windfall, sparking debates on how best to use the money: should it be invested in a business partnership, medical school tuition, or a new house in the suburbs challenging racial segregation? TheatreSquared’s production is directed by Dexter J. Singleton and features a poignant portrayal of Black lives, capturing the essence of Hansberry’s work.
