Fayetteville Police Department Conducts Active Shooter Training at FHS

The Fayetteville Police Department recently conducted active shooter training exercises at Fayetteville High School (FHS). These exercises aimed to prepare school staff, students, and first responders for potential active shooter scenarios, ensuring prompt and effective responses to mitigate harm to victims.

Active shooter situations involve individuals actively trying to kill people in a confined and populated area, typically using firearms and with no discernible pattern in their selection of victims. These situations are unpredictable, quickly evolving, and often over within 10-15 minutes before law enforcement arrives.

The training emphasized the importance of preparedness. Individuals were advised to be aware of their surroundings, note the nearest exits, secure doors, and—only as a last resort—attempt to take the active shooter down if at close range. The deployment of law enforcement is crucial to stop the shooting and minimize harm, and efficient rescue strategies are crucial.

  • Evacuating when possible, including having an escape path in mind and leaving belongings behind.
  • Hiding when evacuation is not possible, finding a secure location that the shooter is unlikely to find.
  • Following law enforcement instructions and not attempting to move wounded people during initial responses.

The training also highlighted the critical role of School Resource Officers (SROs), who are responsible for protecting students and staff in Fayetteville Public Schools. They work closely with local law enforcement to ensure the safety of the school community.
