MLK Jr. Council Honors Local Heroes, Celebrates Community Service in Fayetteville

The Northwest Arkansas Martin Luther King, Jr. Council has been practicing its commitment to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream by honoring local heroes and celebrating community service in Fayetteville.

This year, the council recognized individuals and organizations at the “Salute to Greatness” awards. Dr. Cynthia Nance received the Dr. John L. Colbert Lifetime Achievement Award, emphasizing her remarkable contributions to the community.

The Ernestine White-Gibson Individual Achievement Award went to Alice Gachuzo-Colin, who has dedicated herself to service, leadership, and commitment. This award acknowledges her unwavering efforts to positively impact her community.

Reverend J.A. Hawkins was posthumously awarded for his life and service, which had a profound and lasting impact on the community. Robert “Bob” Gibson III accepted the Rev. J.A. Hawkins Posthumous Award on behalf of his father’s legacy, showing continued dedication to the values they shared.

The Arkansas Support Network was honored with the Organization of the Year Award for its extensive donations of time, effort, and financial assistance to the community. Syard Evans accepted the award for the organization, highlighting their ongoing commitment to social responsibility.

The council’s celebration extends beyond awards, with their annual Recommitment Weekend being a significant event. This weekend includes various activities aimed at promoting education, advocacy, and research in the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

During this weekend, they also organize outdoor volunteer programs where community members can participate in activities like park cleanups, trail maintenance, and creek restoration. These events are crucial for keeping Fayetteville clean, healthy, and beautiful[2].
