National Bike Route Designation Runs Through Northwest Arkansas
The scenic landscapes of Northwest Arkansas have gained significant recognition with the announcement of a national bike route running through the region. This milestone achievement puts Northwest Arkansas on the map as part of the U.S. Bicycle Route System, a network of mapped bike routes across North America.
The 88-mile route, known as USBR 51, stretches from the Missouri border south to Alma, offering a diverse riding experience that combines urban and rural landscapes. Approximately 35 miles of the route follow the Razorback Greenway, providing cyclists with a unique and varied experience.
The designation emphasizes the importance of safety, connected destinations, and fun, making the route appealing to cyclists of all ages and abilities. The Arkansas Department of Transportation, in collaboration with Adventure Cycling Association, aimed to select routes that ensure an enjoyable journey for all.
This new route highlights the region’s commitment to promoting cycling and developing a more comprehensive network of routes. Plans are underway to extend USBR 51 to the Louisiana border, further enhancing the region’s bicycle route infrastructure.
Adventure Cycling Association, a nonprofit based in Montana, is focused on encouraging travel by bike and is instrumental in developing the U.S. Bicycle Route System. The organization has announced new routes in Arkansas, California, and Wyoming, along with extensions in California and Florida, demonstrating its dedication to creating a cohesive network of bike routes across the nation.
With the addition of USBR 51, Arkansas solidifies its position in the growing U.S. Bicycle Route System, promoting cycling tourism, environmental awareness, and community connectivity. This milestone is expected to attract more cyclists to the region and contribute to the local economy.
