Remodeled George Elementary School Features New Gym, Cafeteria as School Year Starts in Springdale

On August 12, 2024, George Elementary School in Springdale, Arkansas, marked the start of the new school year with the grand reopening of its newly remodeled facilities. The school, which had been damaged by an EF3 tornado on March 30, 2022, now boasts a new gymnasium and cafeteria.

The .5 million renovation project converted the library into a temporary cafeteria and included major updates to the school’s infrastructure. The new facilities drew praise from stakeholders during an open house, with Principal Justin Swope noting the positive feedback from students, parents, and teachers alike.

The tornado had devastated the school, destroying the gym and damaging the roof, exterior, playground, cafeteria, and entrance awning. Despite the challenges, the school managed to continue classes during the construction process. Principal Swope expressed his relief and excitement at finally having a safe and state-of-the-art facility for the students.

The remodel not only fixed the damaged areas but also included planned development projects. The comprehensive project covered areas such as the school’s gym, library, kitchen, main office, and music classroom. The funding for the project came from a combination of insurance proceeds, district funds, and state partnership funding.

Students and staff alike were thrilled with the new facilities. The reopening of George Elementary marked a significant milestone in the Springdale school district, which also saw the opening of new buildings for Central and Southwest junior high schools and a new gymnasium and academic wing at Springdale High School.

The district’s commitment to improving learning environments is evident in the new facilities, which are designed to inspire students and staff alike. This significant investment sets the stage for an exciting and productive academic year ahead.
