Talk Business & Politics: Maternal Health, Gender Equity

Addressing Maternal Health Challenges in Arkansas

Arkansas has long struggled with high maternal mortality rates, positioned among the worst in the nation. Recently, a forum titled “Talk Business & Politics: Maternal Health, Gender Equity” brought together experts to discuss this pressing issue. The event aimed to address the poor maternal health outcomes and explore ways to improve them.

The governor of Arkansas, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, established a working group six months ago to tackle the escalating problem. This group, comprising key figures like Janet Mann, Renee Mallory, and Dr. Kay Chandler, is determined to find solutions.

One crucial step in addressing maternal health is ensuring proper access to healthcare. The existing Medicaid infrastructure falls short in providing adequate coverage, particularly because reimbursement rates are low. This results in fewer medical providers accepting Medicaid patients, exacerbating the issue.

Collaboration and policy changes are considered crucial in improving maternal health outcomes. Innovative approaches include educating more doulas and midwives to enhance prenatal care, especially in rural areas where access to traditional healthcare may be limited. Doulas can provide essential support during pregnancy and birth, bridging the gap in healthcare worker availability.

Initiatives such as the Cocoon Pregnancy Care Model, which emphasizes respectful care and a more holistic approach to maternal health, are being explored. Even digital solutions like mental health support through employer partnerships are being tested to support new mothers.

Ultimately, changing the perception of non-traditional healthcare providers and improving both public and private sector collaboration are seen as critical steps in alleviating maternal health challenges in Arkansas.
