Bears in Little Rock: AGFC Offers Safety Tips for Urban Encounters
As sightings of a black bear in Little Rock continue to intrigue residents, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC) is reminding the public of crucial safety guidelines to handle encounters with the curious creature.
The bear, believed to be a male yearling, has been spotted roaming the Leawood neighborhood, South Rodney Parham Road, and the vicinity of Anthony School. While the AGFC considers the bear to be non-threatening and not a significant risk to human safety, residents are still advised to exercise caution and respect the bear’s space.
According to Myron Means, large carnivore program coordinator with the AGFC, young male bears are common culprits in urban sightings during May and June, as they venture away from their mothers to establish new territories. These bears are often naive about the dangers of urban settings and might mistake trash or pet food for an easy meal.
What You Can Do to Avoid Attracting Bears
- Keep trash cans securely closed and store them in enclosed areas.
- Remove pet food and birdseed from outdoor areas.
- Clean and store barbecue grills with uncleaned drip pans.
Means emphasized that taking away potential food sources is key to discouraging bears from lingering in residential areas. By denying bears these easily accessible snacks, residents can encourage the bear to migrate away from the city and find more natural sustenance.
Coexistence with Bears: The Way Forward
As the AGFC continues to monitor the bear’s movements, residents are encouraged to report any further sightings. Such information helps wildlife officials track the bear’s activities and provide timely advice to residents. By remaining vigilant and taking steps to avoid attracting bears, Little Rock residents can ensure a peaceful coexistence with these fascinating animals.
