No Hunting Fatalities in Arkansas for First Time Since 2018
Arkansas has marked a significant milestone in hunting safety. The 2023-24 hunting season saw zero hunting-related fatalities, a feat the state has not achieved since 2018. This impressive record is attributed to the strong focus on hunter safety and education.
Despite this remarkable achievement, the season did see 19 incidents that required hospitalization. The most common cause of these incidents was falls from treestands, with 14 out of the 19 cases involving a lack of safety harness usage. Joe Huggins, AGFC Hunter Education Program coordinator, emphasized the importance of wearing safety harnesses correctly, stating that not doing so is comparable to not wearing a life jacket while boating.
In addition to the proper use of safety harnesses, Huggins stressed the need to regularly inspect hunting equipment. He cautioned that stands left up all year could have degraded due to weather or rodent damage, highlighting the risk of catastrophic failures.
Statistics Show Significant Safety Improvement
The low number of incidents involving firearms was notable. There were only two such incidents reported during the entire season. This statistic is particularly heartening given that an estimated 320,000 hunters participated in the season.
The overall injury rate for the season was a mere 0.006%, demonstrating the effectiveness of the state’s safety initiatives. The AGFC continues to promote safe hunting practices, ensuring that Arkansas remains a safe destination for hunters.
