AT&T outages impact North Little Rock 911 call center

AT&T Outages Disrupt North Little Rock’s 911 Services

The city of North Little Rock experienced two significant AT&T outages affecting its 911 emergency call center over the course of Sunday and Tuesday. These disruptions caused considerable concerns about the city’s ability to effectively respond to emergencies.

According to Gary Gray, the Deputy Director of Emergency Services in North Little Rock, the Sunday evening outage impacted the call center for approximately thirty minutes. During this time, the in-house equipment was unable to receive some 911 calls. Gray noted that despite the inconvenience, emergency responders were still able to communicate with callers by picking up the line and asking how they could assist.

The root cause of these outages was attributed to a software malfunction, which AT&T assured has been resolved. Meanwhile, city officials emphasized that the issues were not a result of cybersecurity breaches but rather the consequences of minimal staffing at these companies, resulting in overwhelmed employees.

This marks the third or fourth AT&T outage this year, highlighting the need for more robust infrastructure to support critical services like the 911 call center. These recurring issues underscore the vulnerability of these essential systems to disruptions that can have severe community-level repercussions.

  • Those experiencing difficulties in reaching 911 were advised to call (501)340-5446 instead.

Community Concerns and Fixes

While the immediate issue has been addressed, the incident raises deeper concerns about the fragility of these systems and the potential for similar incidents in the future. Citizens are left wondering when these critical services will be fully protected from such disruptions.

The recent outages have also sparked discussions about the importance of investing in additional staffing and resources to ensure the reliability of these essential services.
