Bowman and Kanis Road Intersection Construction Nears Completion
The ongoing construction at the Bowman and Kanis Road intersection in Little Rock, Arkansas, is expected to be finished before 2025. This project aims to reduce traffic congestion, improve travel times, and create a safer pedestrian environment. The improvements will include widening Bowman Road to five lanes and enhancing the intersection with Kanis Road to have a seven-lane cross-section. Additionally, a retaining wall will be built along the project’s east side, and the road will feature new curb and gutters along with sidewalks on both sides.
A major factor driving this project is the significant growth in land use along Bowman Road, particularly with the development of thousands of new multi-family apartment units. City officials anticipate that daily traffic on Bowman south of Kanis will increase from around 13,000 vehicles to over 16,000 when all currently zoned and approved multi-family developments are constructed. This project is part of a larger effort to improve the Kanis Road corridor, which has seen over million invested since 2018.
The construction is being carried out by Boyles Construction, which has a history of working in the area, having completed previous contracts worth .25 million and .2 million. The project was awarded after a low bid of .8 million, which is within the city’s estimated cost range. The necessary right-of-way acquisitions, including the buying out of a liquor store, have been completed, and crews have been relocating utility lines in preparation for the project’s main works.
The city’s efforts to revamp the Bowman and Kanis intersection are critical to the long-term growth of this area in a safe and efficient manner. As the project progresses, commuters can expect significant improvements in traffic flow and pedestrian safety once it is completed before 2025.
