Dr. Michael James Birrer: A Renowned Expert in Gynecologic Oncology
Dr. Michael James Birrer is a highly respected and accomplished medical oncologist specializing in gynecologic cancers. He currently serves as the Vice Chancellor and Director of the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS).
His extensive career spans multiple institutions, including the National Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham. His research interests primarily focus on characterizing the genomics of gynecologic cancers to improve the clinical management of these diseases.
Dr. Birrer completed his medical degree and Ph.D. in microbiology and immunology through the Medical Scientist Training Program at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. He then went on to fulfill his residency in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and a fellowship in medical oncology at the National Cancer Institute.
Throughout his career, Dr. Birrer has made significant contributions to the field of gynecologic oncology. He has led numerous research initiatives, including a million Department of Defense grant to study the factors distinguishing long-term survivors of ovarian cancer. This research included the analysis of molecular and genetic markers, as well as quality-of-life (QOL) factors among these patients.
His work has resulted in numerous publications – over 400 peer-reviewed manuscripts and 30 book chapters to date. Dr. Birrer is also recognized for his leadership roles in various medical organizations and has received several prestigious awards, including the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Director’s Service Award.
Currently, Dr. Birrer practices at the Women’s Cancer Clinic in the UAMS Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute, where he accepts new patients and offers comprehensive treatment options for gynecologic cancers.
His exceptional expertise and dedication have earned him multiple appointments, including the directorship of the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he was a Professor of Medicine, Pathology, and OB-GYN.
