Legendary Little Rock Restaurateur Mark Abernathy Announces Retirement
Mark Abernathy, a Little Rock restaurant icon, is bringing his illustrious 55-year career to a close. He has decided to retire from the industry and sell his two prominent restaurants, Loca Luna and Red Door, to the Remolinos Group, led by Fidel Samour, the owner of Sterling Market and Fidel & Co.
Abernathy’s long journey in the restaurant business began at Little Rock’s first TGI Fridays, where he worked after graduating with a banking degree. He found his calling in the culinary world and quickly rose through the ranks. His love for innovation and community involvement led him to establish several restaurants, including Loca Luna and Red Door, which he opened 28 and 10 years ago, respectively.
Loca Luna and Red Door will continue to operate under their current names, with the existing employees and managers retaining their jobs. The gradual changes under the new ownership will ensure a seamless transition for both restaurants. The decision to sell marks the end of an era for Abernathy, who is one of this year’s Arkansas Food Hall of Fame nominees for Proprietor of the Year.
New owner Fidel Samour, who grew up in El Salvador, understands the significance of these restaurants and their role in the local culinary culture. His vision to honor Abernathy’s legacy while introducing new ideas will forge a new chapter for these beloved dining establishments.
This retirement marks a significant milestone for Mark Abernathy, who has contributed deeply to Little Rock’s dining landscape. His influence on the community goes beyond his restaurants, with his work on the Central High School Museum and Visitor Center also leaving a lasting mark.
