Little Rock Boosts Sanitation Fleet with New Garbage Trucks
In response to recent fire incidents involving its garbage trucks, the City of Little Rock has approved the purchase of five new vehicles to bolster its sanitation fleet. This move comes after complaints from sanitation workers about the antiquated state of the city’s current trucks.
Emergency Purchase Addresses Critical Need
The emergency purchase of the new trucks was prompted by an incident on August 28 in which one of the city’s garbage trucks caught fire. Sanitation workers have long complained about the condition of the existing fleet, citing lack of air conditioning and non-functioning loaders, which require manual filling.
Fleet Upgrades and Camera Replacements
Besides the purchase of the new garbage trucks, the city is also replacing security cameras manufactured by Hikvision, a Chinese company, due to national security concerns. Additionally, the Little Rock Zoo is set to receive a new surveillance camera system using existing grants and funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Department of Homeland Security.
Infrastructure Updates and Historic Restoration
The city is also investing in various infrastructure projects, including a 5,000 initiative to repave and maintain the trail at Two Rivers Park. Furthermore, the historic Over-the-Jumps Carousel at the Little Rock Zoo has undergone an intensive restoration, removing 30 to 40 coats of paint to reveal its original finish.
