Little Rock Barbershop Gives Back to Community by Offering Free Haircuts
Arthur Hooker’s life took a dramatic turn when he received a free haircut from Washington Barber College. The 24-year-old went from living in a homeless shelter to securing a job, attending college, and even owning a car. His gratitude towards the free haircut service motivated him to better his life.
Washington Barber College, owned by Arlo Washington, has been offering free haircuts to homeless residents since 2008. By doing so, the college provides students with live models to practice on while also providing a vital service to the community. The college runs a van to collect clients from local homeless shelters and offers additional support such as serving lunch, ensuring that no one is left unemployed.
In a separate community initiative, a safety officer at North Little Rock Middle School gives free haircuts and uses the opportunity to mentor students. This part-time barbering service helps students build confidence and prepare for school.
Be Unique Grooming Salon and Art of Men’s Cuts also run back-to-school events where they offer free haircuts and styles to children aged 4-17 along with free school supplies, backpacks, and food. These events are designed to support the community by enhancing children’s self-esteem and providing essential tools for their education.
Additionally, mobile barbershops such as Personal Enhancement Mobile provide more than just haircuts. They offer a range of free services to homeless people, students, veterans, and seniors, further highlighting the social impact of these community-driven initiatives.
