Over 16 Years Behind Bars for Illegal Firearm Possession
A significant sentence was handed down as a 43-year-old Little Rock man, Christopher Mathis, finds himself facing more than 16 years in federal prison for illegally possessing a firearm. Mathis, a multi-convicted felon, pleaded guilty to the charge on February 13. United States District Judge James Moody Jr. imposed the sentence of 195 months in the Bureau of Prisons, followed by three years of supervised release.
Having been taken into custody on July 22, 2022, Mathis’ troubles began when he “openly carried a firearm” around an apartment complex in the 5000 block of West 65th Street. Witnesses quickly identified Mathis, indicating that he “made threats” towards them. Authorities located the firearm “behind nearby dumpsters” after a thorough investigation. Mathis, classified as an armed career criminal, has a lengthy criminal history including previous convictions for residential burglary, domestic battery, and drug-related offenses.
This lengthy prison term highlights the strict stance taken against repeat offenders illegally possessing firearms. Mathis’s sentencing serves as a stark reminder of the consequences that come with such illicit activities.
