Little Rock Mayor Frank Scott Jr. Holds ‘State of the City’ Address
Mayor Frank Scott Jr. of Little Rock, Arkansas, delivered his sixth annual State of the City address. In this year’s address, Scott
emphasized several key points.
Renewed Calls for a Sales-Tax Increase
Among the highlights of the address was the mayor’s renewed call for a sales-tax increase. This proposal is designed to support public safety, parks, public infrastructure, and the Port of Little Rock. Scott cited the need for additional capital to realize the city’s aspirations and further its post-pandemic recovery. This initiative had been put on hold earlier following a devastating tornado in March 2023 but is now being pursued again.
Public Safety and Housing
Scott emphasized the city’s progress in public safety, noting a 22% decrease in the homicide rate. He also discussed efforts to address the growing number of unhoused individuals in Little Rock, including the construction of a housing project offering individual small homes and the introduction of a Chief Homelessness Officer. This officer will work with landlords to create a vacant property registry to identify available units for unsheltered individuals.
Unity and Progress in Little Rock
Mayor Scott used the platform to express his gratitude for the community’s resilience in the face of challenges like the tornado and to reiterate the message of unity and strength. He encouraged residents to work together, emphasizing that division and disunity hinder the city’s ability to transform and grow.
Looking Forward
Speaking of the year ahead, Scott discussed upcoming events, including a solar eclipse on April 8, which is expected to draw thousands of visitors. Throughout the address, he emphasized the importance of continued progress and the need for sustained efforts to elevate Little Rock.
