Little Rock school enrollment ‘best in years,’ district official says

Little Rock School Enrollment Sees Unprecedented Growth

According to a district official, Little Rock school enrollment has experienced its highest numbers in recent years. This significant increase signals a positive shift for the city’s educational landscape.

In contrast to previous years where enrollment declines were a concern, the latest figures have brought renewed optimism. The Pulaski County Special School District has seen particular success, with an enrollment of 11,626, up 212 students from the previous year.

While some districts have fared better than others, the overall trend is promising. Even Little Rock Central High School, the largest school in the district, has seen an improvement in enrollment, which stands at 2,338 students. This increase is particularly encouraging given the school’s rich history and importance as a National Historic Site.

The growth in enrollment can be attributed to various factors. One significant reason is the expansion of charter schools like the Academies of Math and Science (AMS) Little Rock, which is poised to open in the 2024-25 school year. This tuition-free charter school is expected to attract more students with its unique approach to education and all-around student development.

Despite some sectors still facing challenges, such as Little Rock Central High School dropping slightly from 2,476 students in the 2020-21 school year, the general pattern suggests a resurgence in enrollment. Furthermore, districts like the Pulaski County Special School District are seeing significant growth, with the largest school being Sylvan Hills Middle School.

As state education policies continue to evolve, officials are closely monitoring the situation. The recent approval of the Educational Freedom Account Program, part of the LEARNS Act, might continue to influence student enrollment and distribution between public, charter, and private schools in the coming years.

Nevertheless, the current numbers are a welcome change, indicating a positive direction for Little Rock’s schools and the future of its students.
