Surgeons Bring Medical Care from Little Rock to Guatemala
Little Rock surgeons have recently returned from a week-long mission in Guatemala, providing essential medical care to hundreds of people in need. The mission was part of the “Amistad Por Guatemala” medical readiness exercise, a state partnership program between the U.S. National Guard and Guatemala.
Partnering for Life-Changing Healthcare
In support of this partnership, 36 Arkansas National Guardsmen from the 188th Wing and the 189th Airlift Wing flew into Guatemala City to provide medical services alongside local physicians. They treated between 200 and 500 patients daily, offering a wide range of care including dental, optometry, family medicine, and orthopedic services.
Continuing a Legacy of Support
Arkansas and Guatemala have been paired in this partnership since 2002, with 20 to 30 military-to-military exchanges annually. The National Guard has been actively engaged in providing both military and social support, including public health education, as part of this long-standing relationship.
Easing Fears and Transforming Lives
Besides medical procedures, the team also focused on comforting patients and easing anxiety. They employed simple gestures like smiling and using gentle phrases in Spanish to win the hearts of patients, especially children. This approach helped build trust and make the experience less daunting for Guatemalan families seeking medical help.
System-Wide Impact
This endeavor not only provided immediate care but also contributed to the broader goal of strengthening healthcare systems. It highlights the positive impact of international cooperation and the importance of continuing these efforts to bridge gaps in healthcare globally.
