Little Rock Surgeons Return from Providing Medical Care in Guatemala
A team of medical professionals has just returned from a week of performing surgeries in Guatemala. The group, consisting of 18 members, including three surgeons, brought along a range of medical supplies to assist in their efforts. Over the course of four days, they successfully conducted 61 operations.
One of the surgeons, John Jones, highlighted the immense need for medical care in Guatemala, noting that some patients would have to travel two or three hours to reach the hospital, and others would walk just to access medical services, as there were no alternative options available.
Team leader Denise Johnson emphasized the ongoing need for surgical care, stating that every year they wonder if it will be their final trip, but the continued lack of access to essential surgical services means they can’t leave anyone on the waiting list if they can avoid it. The trip was sponsored by the Pulaski Heights Methodist Church in Little Rock, which enabled them to travel abroad and make a significant impact on the lives of many.
The team’s preparations began as early as February, during which they collect donations from local hospitals like St. Vincent’s. They collaborated with a nonprofit organization named Salud y Paz and set up operations in a private hospital.
This trip not only provided essential medical care but also showcased the strong bond between the team members and the people they served. The continuous efforts of these medical professionals underscore the critical importance of access to quality healthcare for communities around the world.
